Adventures of the Bunch

Welcome to Book Shares1
Author: Mitch Albom
Title: The five people you meet in heaven

Rating: 4

I read this slim book this summer largely because its assigned reading for my teen’s Bible class next year.

Short book, quick read, and very good.

Albom follows an old gentleman’s life in flashbacks (which I always find a little disconcerting, but not too disruptive in this book).

When the old man arrives in Heaven, he gets his questions answered. And learns some things he didn’t even think to question. The pieces of his life puzzle come together. Of course that will resonate with all Adventist readers – Heaven as a place where all your questions are answered, the curtain between the seen and unseen is opened...good stuff.

Author: Tracy Kidder
Title: Mountains Beyond Mountains

Rating: 4

Summary: I have enjoyed several of Tracy Kidder’s books.

He somehow immerses himself in his subject, getting “inside” their head, in a way that is very interesting to me.

In this book, Kidder writes about Paul Farmer, a physician specializing in infectious diseases, who has worked in Haiti for decades, while maintaining an appointment at a hospital in Boston. Travelling back and forth, he seeks to treat AIDS, TB, reduce maternal/infant mortality, etc., in this desperately poor country.

It was a timely read for me because of the recent earthquake in Haiti.

You will learn about the Haitian psyche, some history, some politics, and theology as well! It may even inspire you to join in some humanitarian aid efforts...
